Vancouver’s Top Creatine Questions Answered

When the rain finally clears in Vancouver, gym attendance spikes. And right behind protein powder, creatine is the most asked-about supplement.

Here are the top 7 questions Vancouverites ask about creatine.

1. Does Creatine Cause Water Retention or “Bloat”?

Yes — but not the way people think.

Creatine pulls water into the muscle cell, not under the skin. That intracellular hydration actually supports strength, performance, and muscle fullness.

Most people gain 1–3 lbs initially from water inside the muscle. That’s not fat.

2. Is Creatine Safe for Kidneys?

In healthy individuals: yes.

Decades of research show no kidney damage in healthy adults taking recommended doses (3–5g daily).

Creatinine levels may rise on bloodwork — but that’s a normal byproduct of creatine metabolism, not kidney damage.

If someone already has diagnosed kidney disease, they should consult a physician.

3. Do I Need to “Load” Creatine?

Not required.

Loading phase: 20g/day for 5–7 daysMaintenance: 3–5g/day

Loading saturates muscle faster, but taking 3–5g daily reaches full saturation in about 3–4 weeks anyway.

For most people: skip loading.

4. Does Creatine Work If I’m Over 40?

Yes — possibly even more important.

Creatine helps:

  • Maintain strength

  • Support muscle mass

  • Improve power output

  • Potentially support cognitive function

Muscle loss accelerates after 35–40. Creatine helps blunt that decline.

5. Will Creatine Make Me Lose My Hair?

There is no strong evidence that creatine causes hair loss.

One small study showed a rise in DHT in rugby players, but:

  • It hasn’t been consistently replicated

  • No study has shown creatine causes baldness

If someone is genetically prone to male pattern baldness, DHT sensitivity matters — but creatine is not proven to accelerate it.

6. Is Creatine Just for Bodybuilders?

No.

Creatine benefits:

  • Weightlifters

  • Runners (sprint performance)

  • Combat athletes

  • Aging adults

  • Vegetarians (who often have lower baseline creatine stores)

It supports high-intensity energy production (ATP), which applies far beyond bodybuilding.

7. What’s the Best Type of Creatine?

Creatine monohydrate.

It’s:

  • The most studied form

  • The most effective

  • The most affordable

  • Just as effective as “fancy” versions

Micronized monohydrate may dissolve better — but the molecule is the same. Saying that, we carry many kinds including powders, capsules, and even gummies.

Bonus: Does It Matter When I Take It?

Not much.

Daily consistency matters more than timing.Post-workout with carbs may slightly improve uptake — but total daily intake is what counts.
